Why learn Mountain Navigation ?
Navigation, Art or Science? Whichever way you look at it, accurate map reading and skilled navigation are vital for all those who venture into the mountains. Some of us like to follow paths in the hope that we will remain on the straight and narrow, but all too often the track evaporates or becomes covered by snow, leaving the inexperienced and unskilled walker with a rising sense of panic.
A brief look at the reports of Mountain Rescue Teams says it all. Many searches are conducted every year for walkers and climbers who find themselves lost in poor visibility or at night. In addition mountain accidents are frequently caused by errors originating from poor route finding.
Whether walker or climber, time invested in acquiring effective map reading and navigation skills will be well spent. Confident map reading associated with accurate navigation is the foundation to all aspects of mountain leisure, and will enhance the joy of even the simplest outing.
Above all, learning to navigate is fun.
Best wishes,
